Security
What’s going on over there? We had two burglaries on San Marino Drive in August/September 2021. We want to make you aware of the conditions so you can take action to keep you, your family and property safe. We believe that if we all keep our eyes and ears open and take action if something seems off, we will prevent more thefts from happening right in front of us.
Common Circumstances: Both were committed in weekday daytime (1:30pm) and early evening (5:45pm). Both were committed within 10 minutes of the owner noticeably pulling out of their driveway. In both cases, the vandal threw a rock to break a window (one by the front door, one in back in an upstairs room). Both were primary break-ins through the easily accessible backyard or backyard gate where there was side street access either through a long driveway or at the East side of Via Montebello. Both vandals drove a car up and down the street several times and one made a sudden U-turn in the middle of the street.
What Can You Do? Here are a few suggestions. Trust your own judgement and if you see or hear something that seems usual, consider these steps:
If you see anyone looking around the side or back of a house say hello.
If they seem surprised, ask if you can help them.
If you see any suspicious activity (like a car going up and down the street several times), take a picture if possible of people, vehicles and license plates.
If you see any suspicious activity that is concerning, like a broken window or car racing down the street, call the San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000.

Other Tips to Stay Safe
If you are new to the area, we have had some minor thefts of mail, packages and car break-ins. Consider these tips:
Promptly pick up your mail and packages daily. Deliver any outgoing mail of value to a secure drop box or mail facility.
If you will be out of town, put your mail on hold and have it delivered after you return. You can make this request at https://www.usps.com/manage/hold-mail.htm.
If parked in your driveway or on the street, keep car doors locked. Do not keep garage openers in outdoor parked cars as vandals have used these to take valuables from garages.
Never leave house keys under the front door mat or in an easily accessible location to the front door. (Vandals have been reported looking around for keys.)
Thanks everyone for your efforts to keep our safe and welcoming neighborhood vibe.
